Early Summer Windsurfing Session

Warm westerly winds brought sunshine and a strong breeze to Hechshire State Park on June 18th, drawing windsurfers out to dance, skip, and glide across the whitecapped waters of the Great South Bay.

The sport traces its roots to the 1960s, when American inventors Newman Darby, Jim Drake, and Hoyle Schweitzer pursued the same dream — merging the freedom of surfing with the power of sail. A simple rubber universal joint that let the rider steer the sail freely in any direction changed everything.

I was twelve when I learned on Canandaigua Lake, working two paper routes that summer to earn my first board. Over forty years of handheld sail adventures followed. A youthful passion turned into a lifelong pursuit.
